Our resident BBQ expert, Dave Parrish, teamed up with thermometer giant Maverick Industries to design, develop, and create this must-have thermometer. The XR-50 Thermometer is loaded with features – FOUR probes, hi/low alarms, large back-lit display, extended remote unit range, and more – at a price that won’t break the bank.

  • Multiple probes – the XR-50 comes standard with 4 hybrid, waterproof probes that can be used in any combination to measure grill and/or food temperature.
  • Easy to use – a single back-lit LCD screen provides information on all four probes including hi/low alarms that couldn’t be easier to set. And the base and remote units come with hooks, magnets and a kickstand – ready to go anywhere and everywhere!
  • Reliable – with a 500 ft range, you don’t have to worry about getting too far away from the grill before losing signal to the remote unit. This includes signal through multiple walls inside, too!
  • Award-winningAmazingRibs.com gives the XR-50 “a well-deserved (Best Value) Platinum Medal”.

WE THOUGHT OF EVERYTHING.

When it comes to a “leave-in” digital thermometer there are five things everyone wants:

Accuracy, simplicity, flexibility, reliability, and affordability.

Accuracy:  All thermometers have a range in which they are most accurate.  Period.  Our probes have been designed and third-party tested to be extremely accurate in the ranges most critical to the outdoor cook…. 32 F to 250 F.  This range covers both the pit temperatures and meat temperatures you care about the most.

Simplicity:  After a few minutes you’ll understand how to program every function of our thermometer.  We’ve designed it so that you get all the info you need, when you need it, and setting alarms is a snap.

Flexibility:  Most of the commonly used thermometers have just two probes.  The XR-50 doesn’t just have 4 probes, but they are all interchangeable and can read grill or meat temperatures as needed.  And with 4-foot long probe wires, you have more flexibility to run your wires and place your base unit wherever you may want.

Reliability:  With 500 ft range line of sight the XR-50 breaks records.  What’s more, that range translates to usable connectivity in your home.  You’ll be able to monitor your temperatures from rooms in your house that would otherwise be impossible with all the 150 to 300 ft range thermometers on the market.  With waterproof probes you don’t have to worry about damaging the probes during cleaning – the #1 reason probes fail.  Aside from being waterproof our probes are very rugged.  They can read temperatures from 32 F to 572 F and the probe wires are rated in temps up to 716 F.

Affordability:  To get the above features in other thermometers, you’re likely going to spend a lot of money.  We’ve incorporated your must-have features into a quality made product at a price point so you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to get a “fancy” thermometer.

What you won’t find with this thermometer:

  • A screen that washes out in the sunlight
  • Any need to worry that your “app” is up to date
  • Probe wires that are too short (3 ft just isn’t enough!)
  • Alarms that are hard to program
  • Instructions that are hard to understand

Included in the box:

Receiver unit – smaller unit
Transmitter unit – larger unit
2 detachable stainless steel 6” long food probes
2 detachable stainless steel 3” long bbq probes & 2 grate clips
4 AAA batteries

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the XR-50 have the capability to connect to an app via WiFi or Bluetooth?2019-07-29T15:38:01+00:00
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Certainly not! This thermometer was built to be rugged, durable, easy to use, and HIGHLY reliable.  WiFi and Bluetooth have short range, rely on additional equipment, are prone to break with software updates, and your thermometer becomes a paperweight when the manufacturer decides to move onto a new model and stops supporting your old model.  The XR-50 is a self contained unit that gives you everything you need and want in an everyday thermometer right out of the box!

How often does the base unit communicate to the remote unit?2019-07-29T15:38:01+00:00
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

With INSTA-SYNC® technology, the base unit communicates to the remote unit almost immediately once the units are turned on and every 20 seconds afterward. You’ll enjoy instant turn-on connectivity and a much reduced false alarm rate when the receiver gets close to its range limit.

Is there a warning to let me know if the remote loses connection to the base unit?2019-07-29T15:38:01+00:00
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Yes. If connection to the base unit is lost for 48 seconds, the remote screen will start to flash. The remote unit will continue to try to connect to the base for 3 minutes (the screen will continue flashing). After three minutes without a connection, the remote unit will emit an audible alarm. [ABC note: we designed and LOVE this feature! It eliminates annoying alarm sounds when there is a temporary loss of connection, and waits until there is a defined “crisis point” before letting you know the connection has been disabled.]

Is there a way for me to check my thermometer if I’m concerned about inaccurate readings?2019-07-29T15:38:01+00:00
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

To test the accuracy of the thermometer, immerse the probes first in ice water (temperature should read 32 F) and then boiling water (temperature should read 212 F at sea level).  If the reported temperatures vary greatly from these standards, contact Maverick for additional troubleshooting and customer support.

How long will the batteries last?2019-07-29T15:38:01+00:00
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Under normal use, even cheap AAA batteries should last over a month. When needing to be replaced, the base unit and receiver use two standard AAA batteries each.

Where can I get replacement probes?2019-07-29T15:38:00+00:00
Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Back-up probes, or to purchase probes after the 1-year warranty period has expired, can be purchased directly from Maverick.

Great product - could be greater

    Erik Radock (verified owner)

I have one at my main home and bought another for my vacation home. As far as wireless thermometers go, it’s great – but could be greater.

Some features I’d like to see in future versions:
The ability to set alarm temperatures and turn them on/off from the remote, a cell phone app or website
The ability to run airflow/temp control devices
Web connectivity to monitor long cooks and keep a record of them with a cell phone app and website
These features to be available through firmware updates or trade in so I don’t need to buy new units to get them

I’ve used a ET732 for years, so I was excited to see a 4 channel unit offered. However, all 4 channels aren’t the same. 1 & 2 are for grill temp only with a lower limit of 221 degrees. All alarm adjustments have to be made at the transmitter outside instead of the receiver inside. A decent device, but not as convenient to use as its 2 channel predecessors. The alarm beeper could be louder, and as for the extended range I can’t tell much difference.

    A keeper

    Cy (verified owner)

This is my second try. My first was an iGrill. Frustration with its inability to maintain a Bluetooth signal when distance from grill never exceeded 40-50 feet led me to have a wandering eye,,, I purchased the XR-50 on sale around Christmas of ‘18 and have used it many many times indoors and out. I have a WSM 18 and this worjs like a charm. Easy to program, signal strength is steady and dependable. I don’t need charts and graphs. Just temp. This has been the answer for me.

    Great customer service!

    Richard Dube

Love using this thermometer! Works great and as advertised. Purchased mine just before Thanksgiving and used for my first ever smoked turkey. It helped turn out an amazing turkey.
After only a couple uses the port on the main head broke internally and I could not plug in one of the probes. Having 3 extra probes was very useful and I was still doing a lot BBQ so I did not have a problem checking multiple temps. I had purchased through Amazon and after a few months I had down my cooking so I reached out through amazon asking how to go about a warranty claim. His was late afternoon on a Sunday. I received a call Monday am but missed and I had a voice all asking me to call. I was busy and did not call right away. I believe it Wednesday had I received a replacement in the mail and I had not even called back yet. There was return label in envelope. This is great service in my opinion. Above and beyond. New works great. If quality is great. I believe fluke thing that broke. Stuff happens but a company truly shows there value on they act regarding situations like this. I live on Washington State and have accidentally left mine outside in the rain and no problems. Screen easy to read as always and very easy to program. Temps always seem very accurate. Love using.

Best RT I have ever ised

    Michael Swanson (verified owner)

I have used an older model Maverick RediCheck for many years wanted to do an update, so after reviewing the options, I bought the X50. Wow. Love this. I love the multiple ways the transmitter secures, from magnets to a hanger to a kickstand. And the four probes is awesome. The absolute single best thing is that I can program the unit inside the house, without the probes attached! Then when I go and plug in everything, it is up and running. Love it. And no issue with it dropping the signal Perfect.

Awwsome product best range thermometer I have owned.

    Armando Vasquez

The best, I am inside my house in the day or at night and I can see 4 temperatures-pit and 3 meats from my inside remote unit! Amazing! Once I’m done with the pit, I can set the meata in the oven to finish the cook while meats are wrapped and same situation, I take the remote unit with me anywhere around the house or yard. 1 issue I have had…. on the input for probe 1, the plastic that holds the probe broke off and now I can not use probe 1. I can hear the plastic part inside the unit.

I have several other temp. Gauges, this one is by far the best!!! I can go inside my home or out in the front yard and still be connected and know what is going on with my cooker.

    Outstanding.

    Ryan (verified owner)

I have been looking for a new thermometer setup to upgrade from my Maverick redicheck. This checks all the boxes, including being able to monitor two meats, and two pits. I find the magnets are especially helpful attaching to my Weber performer, and that is one of my favorite design aspects so far. I love that they increased the probe lengths, but not far enough that they become unmanageable. The only negative that I have found so far is that every single time you press any button, a loud “beep” occurs. Which is fine for normal cooking, but when I’m waking up at 0300 to start a brisket my wife gets upset hearing “beep beep beep beep beep” as I set and check the readouts downstairs. I would love it if ABC/Maverick could design a way to just silence the beeping, then this would be literally perfect. Overall, this is my favorite thermometer set up and is a must buy for any amateur- serious bbqer. 10/10.

    Excellent product

    Beers-Jack of BBQ

This was the perfect system that I was looking for. I wanted a unit which had at least 4 probes and longer range for my house and location of my grills. The XR50 was exactly what I was looking for and at this price you cannot go wrong! I have done numerous cooks and it has worked perfect. Happy Customer!

    Almost Perfect !

    Erin Streetman

I love this thermometer except for one thing. Programmability should be on the receiving unit. IMHO. I don’t want to be forced to return to the pit if I decide to make a change on my settings. The unit is the best build quality I have seen. Settings are easy to change & it works perfectly. Hopefully there will be another version where everything can be controlled from the unit that stays with the user. I still like it & recommend it .

    Just what i needed!

    Jason

I can go anywhere on our property and down the road halfway to my neighbors gate! LOL – The probes have plenty of length. Cables are good. Display is perfect. The magnets are super strong. I have a unit that hooks up to my phone; but, it doesn’t have the range I need. I still use both; but, I rely on the Maverick for longer cooks – larger cuts & keeping an eye on on chamber temps. I love it.

    Dream Come True (literally)

    Jerod P. Broussard (verified owner)

The linear distance from my bedroom to my cooking area is approximately 75 ft., which includes two walls, multiple doors/doorways, and an internet router. My Maverick ET-732’s and Thermoworks Smoke couldn’t quite finish the deal and our WiFi goes out almost daily. The XR50 picks up where they left off. Now I can put meat smoking at 0330 hrs, set the alarms, and GO TO MY BED and not some flippin’ blow-up air mattress in the den. And with 4 probes to boot, monitoring a smoker loaded down with 6 briskets just got easier! Thanks Dave!!!

    Fantastic product

    Chris R (verified owner)

I’ve only used it a couple times but it’s miles better than the igrill 2. The range is great. No dropped connections and it tells you if your heat range drops and when it’s ready. Range and reliability are the best parts of the device.

Wish I could delete previous comment. After working with this It has completely changed the way I cook. I trust it so much I never raise the lid anymore to peek. Even on long cooks. I use it on my Woodwind Pellet, Weber 22, and P3 Broilmaster gasser. I swear by it now once familiar with it

Almost perfect but was to hard to dial in temps. I love it but almost lost 50 bucks a meat. Im stuck with it guess but that’s OK cause I no longer worry about cook times
